Surf Life Saving Australia is proud to announce that the iconic Australian Surf Life Saving Championships, affectionately known as “The Aussies,” will return to North Kirra, Gold Coast from 21 to 29 March 2026. This announcement also includes confirmation that Surf Boat competition will head back to Tugun following a change of venue due to the impacts of Cyclone Alfred prior to the 2025 event.
Following the resounding success of the 2025 event, which saw thousands gather on the shores of North Kirra and the southern Gold Coast, the Championships will once again bring together more than 7,000 athletes from over 300 surf life saving clubs across the country for nine days of competition and club rivalry.
This announcement reaffirms the Gold Coast’s standing as a premier destination for surf sport, thanks to the generous support of Tourism and Events Queensland and Experience Gold Coast.
Surf Life Saving Australia CEO, Adam Weir, said: “The Gold Coast continues to be an exceptional host of the Aussies, and we are thrilled to return in 2026.
“The location offers an ideal destination for both athletes and spectators, and the enthusiasm from the local community has been incredible.
“The Aussies is more than just a competition — it’s a celebration of Surf Life Saving and our volunteers who keep our beaches safe.”
The 2026 Championships will feature a packed program of events including Kellogg’s Nutri-Grain Youth and Nipper Championships, masters competition as well as the open’s competition. With a vibrant festival atmosphere and thousands of supporters expected, the event also brings significant tourism and economic benefits to the region.
“The support from Tourism and Events Queensland and Experience Gold Coast has been instrumental in bringing this national event back to North Kirra,” Mr Weir added.
“Their commitment to showcasing the best of Queensland’s coastline and community is the ideal alignment for Surf Life Saving Australia.”
Minister for Tourism Andrew Powell, said: “It doesn’t get more much more Aussie than The Aussies. It’s the premier event for hundreds of life saving clubs across the country and where better to host than at Queensland’s world-famous beaches. I’m sure the 7,000 athletes, as well as local businesses across the coast that will host, feed, and entertain them during their stay, will be counting down the days already.”
“What a coup, securing the Australian Surf Lifesaving Championships for 2026,’’ said Gold Coast Mayor Tom Tate.
“Hosting The Aussies adds an exciting chapter to our city’s annual events calendar with 7000 athletes representing 300 clubs over nine magical days.
“I applaud Surf Life Saving Australia for keeping the faith in our city after a massive 2025 event. I’m confident our southern beaches will again turn it on come March 2026.’’
