Both players timed the ball extremely well in the first set and managed to get through their service games unscathed. Despite a few errors flying off both racquets, Ostapenko and Wang raised their levels and stayed evenly matched. After a couple of marathon service games by Ostapenko, the No. 25 seed was able to sneak in the only break of the first set at 5-4 and sealed the set.
In the second set, Wang started off as the more offensive player, and nabbed her first break off the Ostapenko serve due to a double fault. However, Wang began struggling on her own service game, gaving Ostapenko the chance to quickly break back to remain on serve.
As the match wore on, Wang created more opportunities to break with the help of a couple of errors coming on Ostapenko’s side, but couldn’t capitalize. Ostapenko grew more confident as she navigated a tight service hold a game prior and was able to break the lefty, going up 3-1 in the second set.
While serving for the match at 5-1, the Latvian was met with resistance from her opponent and was broken. Despite a last-ditch effort from Wang to catch up, Ostapenko was able to stifle her momentum and serve out the match.
