In Beijing, Canada’s Team Gushue defeated Denmark 10–5 on Wednesday to begin their Olympic curling campaign. First-time Olympians Geoff Walker and Brett Gallant accompany Brad Gushue, who won gold at the 2006 Olympics with Mark Nichols.
With a good opening end that saw them steal a point from the Danes, Team Gushue started the game relaxed yet motivated. In the second end, Denmark scored two goals with the hammer. But in the third end, Canada stormed back. Following a few errors by Danish captain Mikkel Krause, Canada gained control of the match by drawing for three points. After Canada drew for one in the fifth to take a slim lead into halftime, Denmark came roaring back in the fourth end, scoring two to square the score.
Gushue admitted to Colleen Jones of the CBC during the break that he was nervous and that he needed to get over the fact that he hadn’t been on the ice for the previous five days. “I think there’s a little bit of adjustment,” he stated. “But I believe it’s really wonderful to have a lead right now. We’re doing well.”
